So many of us spend a small, monthly fortune on supplying our bodies with the very best possible vitamins in hope that they are actually ‘doing something.’ We’re never really sure, except that maybe we find we aren’t actually catching every hideous flu going around and assume that we have built up our immune systems enough to avoid not only common colds, but also maybe some forms of cancer. But who really knows, right?
Finally, we may have some proof to justify our beliefs.
Harvard Medical School had analyzed data collected in the Physicians’ Health Study (PHS) II. They took 14,641 male U.S. physicians, initially aged 50 years or older and gave them either a daily multivitamin or a placebo and followed them for an average of 11.2 years. Now remember we are not talking pricey, top of the line vitamins here, just a basic multivitamin.
What they found is that men taking the multivitamin had an 8% reduction in total cancer incidences. Sure that may not seem like much but if there was a chance you could avoid cancer completely by taking those One A Day’s…wouldn’t you?
They reported that: “Daily multivitamin use was associated with a reduction in total cancer among 1312 men with a baseline history of cancer,” the study authors conclude that: “In this large prevention trial of male physicians, daily multivitamin supplementation modestly but significantly reduced the risk of total cancer.”
Now I’m still going to buy the fancy vitamins because I’m thinking if a basic multivitamin can do that, can you imagine how long I might live chowing down on the costly ones!
