Chemical Peels for Men

Are men doing cosmetic treatments too?

One of my female clients was surprised the other day when she was sitting next to a man in our Vancouver waiting room and then saw another come out after having a cosmetic treatment.

She looked surprised and asked, “Are men doing cosmetic treatments, too?!”

I’d never really thought about it, but a good 25% of our Vancouver cosmetic treatments are provided to men, and, they are excellent clients! Although few admit to it, many men are getting Botox, fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse and one is even on Sculptra and Selphyl!

Things have definitely changed, maybe they see that celebrities like David  Beckham, Simon Cowell and David Hasselhoff are doing it and that makes it okay. Some are feeling odd because their wives are enjoying the benefits of anti-aging treatments and are looking much younger than they are. Whatever the reason, men just don’t seem to be as concerned about what people will think. They don’t seem to care about the downtime of a laser or some bruising they might get from an injectable.

Some are in great shape, looking younger than their years by taking good care of their bodies; they just want a face that matches. Very athletic guys may find that the same exercise regime that gives them muscle tone also reduces the fat in their faces – making them appear old and tired. One of the best ways to plump up their lines is with some filler or a natural, slow-growing collagen stimulator like Sculptra. Men like the fact that Sculptra takes about 4 months and 3 treatments to get the full results so they look more youthful gradually and no one ever guesses they had something done.

As the corporate world is being inundated with younger faces, men and women alike are trying to take off years in order to compete and keep their positions. Right or wrong, it’s just the way things are. Looking younger makes you appear more capable and energetic. When men discover how easy it is to smooth out those frown lines with a bit of Botox or to replace some volume in their cheeks and mid-face, they are all over it. They usually return faithfully when their treatments wear out.

It seems to be more common for men to be dealing with acne scars later in life and it can really zap their self-confidence. Acne scars also appear to worsen with age as the skin loses elastin and collagen and the scars collapse on themselves leaving small creases all over the face. We find that Fraxel Laser for skin resurfacing and smoothing is very popular among males as a result.

More men are concerned about the quality of their skin than ever, buying high quality, doctor recommended skin care and having chemical peels and microdermabrasion.

Apparently, the number of men having Botox has increased by 25% this year – and tripled since 2011 in the UK and we are noticing similar increases here in Canada.

So yes ladies, you will see more and more men in the waiting room and passing you in the hallway on their way to erasing lines and years.

Age is as a state of mind. Aging is a treatable condition.
