Wondering how to remove skin tags? You don’t have to live with these unsightly and occasionally irritating skin growths. Anti-Aging Medical & Laser Clinic in Vancouver BC, Canada offers skin tag removal that is safe, quick, and painless.
What is a Skin Tag?
Skin tags are small, harmless, growths of skin that usually appear where skin rubs against skin, such as eyelids, armpits, upper chest, beneath breasts, and on the neck. They are called a “tag” because they look like raised piece of hanging skin, sometimes slightly darker in colour than surrounding skin. Risk factors for skin tags are: a family history of skin tags (susceptibility can be genetic), being overweight, pregnancy, diabetes, and illegal steroid use. About 25% of people over 50 will develop skin tags. Though harmless, they can be unsightly, cause social embarrassment, and become irritated by friction from skin and clothing.
What is Skin Tag Removal?
Regardless of the skin tag removal method employed, the process cuts off the blood supply to the tag, which causes it to fall off, either immediately or within several days. There are several techniques used by doctors: cryosurgery (freezing the tag off with liquid nitrogen), excision with a scalpel, or electrocautery (removed with heat from a laser). Dr. Frame prefers electrocautery because it provides one of the most aesthetically pleasing results.

Am I a good candidate?
If you have skin tags that are visible (not easily covered by clothing) which cause you social discomfort, or, are irritated by friction, you are a good candidate for skin tag removal treatments.
Before the treatment
A consultation will determine whether you are a candidate, the best course of treatment and how many treatment sessions you will need.
What happens during the treatment?
Skin tag removal is a fast, comfortable, in-office procedure. First, the surrounding skin and the skin tag is cleaned. Then, the skin tag is injected with Xylocaine, an anaesthetic. Once numb, the tag stalk (the peduncle) is burned with several touches of the electrocautery hand piece. Under freezing, this is relatively painless.
The tag will become dry and black and will either fall off immediately or within about 1 week.
Treatment time: approximately 30 minutes.
After the treatment
There may be a tiny mark or scar left where the skin tag was, particularly if the area has also darkened from the irritation caused by years of friction.
Recovery time: There is no downtime needed after skin tag removal. You can resume your normal routine right away.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments required depends on the number of skin tags being removed. Several skin tags can be removed in a single treatment.
Other treatment options
Although our medical, laser and skin care clinic uses electrocautery, there are several other treatment options:
- Surgical removal
- Cautery (burning)
- Liquid nitrogen cryotherapy (freezing)
- Non-prescription skin tag removal products
