How a nose looks depends on more than the nose itself. Its shape comes from inherited bone and cartilage, sometimes changed by an old injury, and skin thickness softens or sharpens what's underneath. The appearance of the nose is largely determined by inherited bone and cartilage structure, which sets the height of the bridge, the shape and support of the tip, and overall width. A visible hump or deviation may be developmental or the result of previous injury or a healed fracture. Skin thickness affects how underlying structure shows through. The chin and mid-face also matter: a smaller or set-back chin can make the nose look more prominent even when the nose itself is average. Aging can subtly change the tip and soften support over time.

See a doctor if nose concerns come with difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils, recurrent nosebleeds, persistent crusting or discharge, a new or growing lump on the nose, a skin lesion that changes or isn't healing, or a recent injury with pain, deformity or bleeding. Sudden swelling, severe pain or signs of infection also need prompt care.
