Understanding Radiesse.
Radiesse is an injectable filler that restores structure and contour, then keeps working by encouraging your own collagen. It's made of tiny calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres, a mineral-based material similar to one found naturally in bone, suspended in a smooth gel. The gel gives volume straight away, and the microspheres act as a scaffold for new collagen over the following weeks and months.
Radiesse is firmer than many hyaluronic acid gels, which makes it well suited to areas that need structural support. At our clinic, it's injected by our experienced physicians.
How does Radiesse work?
Radiesse works in two stages. Straight after injection, the gel carrier gives volume and lift in the treated area. Over the following weeks and months, your body gradually absorbs the gel, while the calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres act as a scaffold that encourages new collagen to form around them.
So the first effect comes from the gel, and a longer-term contribution comes from your own collagen. In time, the microspheres are also broken down and absorbed, and the result gradually softens.

How long your result lasts depends on the area, the amount used and the technique. Individual results vary.
Safety, side effects and considerations
Radiesse is a medical product, injected at our clinic only by our experienced physicians after assessment. A numbing cream or a local anesthetic (lidocaine) keeps you comfortable, and the product is placed with either a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula, depending on the area.
Common and temporary
- Swelling, redness and tenderness where the product was placed
- Bruising
- A firm feeling in the treated area while it settles
Less common risks
- Lumps or nodules
- Infection at an injection site
- Allergic reaction
- Swelling or a reaction that appears later, sometimes weeks or months on, often after dental work, a vaccine or an illness like the flu
Blocked blood vessel (vascular occlusion). With any dermal filler, there's a rare but serious risk of the product going into, or pressing on, a blood vessel. Blood flow to the skin can be affected and, very rarely, vision. Our physicians are prepared to recognize this and act promptly. Call the clinic straight away on 604-261-9121 if treated skin turns white or pale (blanching) or looks dusky or blotchy, if pain is getting stronger, or if your vision changes in any way. For a vision change, go to the nearest emergency department if you can't reach us immediately.
Good to know. Radiesse isn't a hyaluronic acid product, so hyaluronidase doesn't dissolve it. Our physicians take this into account when choosing where to use it, and correct placement is especially important with a firmer product.
When treatment may need to wait
- Infection, a cold sore or inflamed skin in or close to the treatment area
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- An autoimmune condition, which your physician goes through with you beforehand
- A bleeding disorder, or blood-thinning medicines or supplements that make bruising more likely. Keep taking any prescribed medicine unless your doctor advises otherwise.
- An allergy to lidocaine or to anything in Radiesse
- Dental work, a vaccine or an illness that's recent or coming up. Tell us, and we'll plan the timing with you.
Aftercare
For a short time after treatment, avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs and massaging or pressing on the treated area, unless your physician advises otherwise. You'll leave with aftercare instructions for your areas, including how long these precautions apply.
