Scalp Hydration & Clarification

A cleansing and hydrating scalp treatment that helps remove buildup and relieve dryness or flaking while aiding a healthy foundation for hair.

Scalp hydration & clarification in Vancouver

Understanding Scalp Hydration & Clarification.

Most people look after their hair and ignore the skin it grows out of.

A scalp can end up coated in a mixture of oil, sweat, dry shampoo, styling product and shed skin cells. Or it can go the other way — dry, tight and flaking. Either state tends to feel itchy and uncomfortable, and neither is fixed by washing your hair more often.

This treatment does two straightforward things: it clears the scalp, then it hydrates it. That is the whole idea.

What it is not: a hair-loss treatment, or a replacement for diagnosing a scalp condition. If your scalp has been persistently itchy, red or scaling, that needs a diagnosis before it needs a treatment like this one.

Treatment options and technologies

In-clinic scalp cleansing and hydration is one of several clinically recognised ways to address a congested, dry or uncomfortable scalp, and it is not always the appropriate one — a scalp condition such as seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis or a fungal infection needs diagnosis and medical treatment on its own terms.

The option available here, selected according to clinical findings:

  • HydraFacial Keravive — considered for oil and product buildup around the follicle openings, for a scalp that feels tight, dry or coated, and for light flaking that is not linked to a diagnosed condition; a take-home product may accompany it for maintenance between visits

The selection is a clinical decision, not one you are expected to make. The scalp is examined in person, parting the hair to see the skin itself, and your washing and styling routine, product use, known sensitivities, medicated shampoos already prescribed and any recent scalp surgery or chemical processing are reviewed before treatment is recommended. Unexplained shedding or thinning is assessed separately.

Concerns this treatment may help

It may be worth considering if you have:

  • Product and oil buildup that shampoo does not seem to shift
  • A scalp that feels tight, dry or uncomfortable
  • Light flaking not linked to a diagnosed condition
  • An oily or congested scalp between washes
  • General itchiness or that heavy, coated feeling
  • A scalp you want prepared before other hair or scalp treatments

If your reason for coming in is thinning or shedding hair rather than scalp comfort, say so at the outset. That is a different question and deserves a different answer.

Ask If This Suits Your Scalp →

Who it suits, and who should be assessed first

It suits people whose scalp feels congested, oily, dry or generally uncomfortable, and who want it cleaner and more balanced. It also suits people who use a lot of styling product or dry shampoo, wear their hair up frequently, or exercise often.

Be assessed first if you have persistent itching, redness, thick or greasy scaling, sore or weeping patches, or flaking that has not responded to over-the-counter shampoos. These can indicate a condition that needs treating on its own terms.

This is not a hair-loss treatment. If you are shedding more than usual or your part is widening, that warrants proper assessment of the cause. A clean scalp is a sensible foundation, not a solution.

Mention sensitivities. If you react easily to hair products or fragrances, tell us so ingredients can be reviewed beforehand.

Before your treatment

A short review of your scalp and routine is enough to confirm this is the right thing for you.

We look at the scalp itself, including through the hair, to see whether what is there is buildup and dryness or something that needs a diagnosis.

We ask about:

  • How long the dryness, flaking, itch or oiliness has been present, and whether it fluctuates
  • How often you wash your hair, and what you use
  • Dry shampoo, styling products, colouring and chemical treatments
  • Any known sensitivities or reactions to hair or skincare ingredients
  • Medicated shampoos or prescribed scalp treatments you are already using
  • Recent scalp procedures, including hair transplant surgery

If what you describe sounds like a condition rather than congestion, we will tell you so and point you toward getting it diagnosed rather than booking you in regardless.

That review costs you nothing. Consultations here are complimentary, so being told your scalp needs a diagnosis rather than a treatment does not come with a consultation fee. A booking fee is charged to hold the appointment, covering the physician's time and reducing no-shows.

What a session is like

You stay seated and clothed. There is nothing invasive about this — no needles, no energy device.

The scalp is worked through in sections, parting the hair so the treatment reaches the skin rather than just the hair.

What it feels like. Most people describe a cool, tingly, slightly scratchy sensation and find it relaxing. It should not be painful. Say something if any area feels sore or overly sensitive, and pressure can be eased.

Practical note. Your hair will be damp afterwards and may feel lighter or flatter than usual, so it is worth not scheduling it immediately before something you want to look polished for.

Who performs it. Treatment is delivered by our experienced laser technicians and estheticians, working directly under the guidance of our physicians — Dr. Gidon Frame, Dr. Sarina Govindasamy and Dr. Teri Fisher.

What to expect, and for how long

What it can improve: how clean and comfortable the scalp feels, buildup around the follicle openings, dryness and tightness, and light flaking related to congestion or dryness.

What it cannot do: regrow hair, stop shedding, or treat seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis or a fungal infection. It also will not permanently change how much oil your scalp produces.

When you notice a difference: usually straight away. This is one of the few treatments where the main effect is felt on the day rather than developing over months.

Repeating it: this is a maintenance treatment, so the effect fades as oil, sweat and product accumulate again. Many people repeat it periodically. The right interval depends on how oily your scalp runs and how much product you use, and is worked out from experience rather than fixed in advance.

What influences how long it lasts: how often you wash, how much styling product and dry shampoo you use, how much you sweat, hair length and thickness, the season, and whether you use any home-care product provided.

Expect some variation. A scalp that runs very oily will feel congested again sooner than one that does not.

After your treatment

There is essentially no downtime. Most people go straight back to their day.

What is normal: a clean, refreshed, slightly tingly scalp; hair that feels lighter or softer than usual; occasionally brief mild tenderness or a little pinkness where the scalp was worked over, settling quickly.

Helpful in the first day or so: hold off on heavy styling products, dry shampoo and tight ponytails, and let the scalp be.

If a home-care product was provided, use it as directed — the between-visit part is where most of the ongoing benefit sits.

Let us know if you notice itching, redness or irritation that persists rather than settling, so the products used can be reviewed.

What you might notice afterwards

This is a gentle, surface-level treatment, and most people notice nothing beyond feeling cleaner. Occasionally there may be:

  • Mild tenderness of the scalp, particularly if you have been treated more thoroughly in one area
  • Brief tingling during or shortly after the treatment
  • Slight pinkness, which usually settles within hours
  • Hair that feels different — lighter, flatter or softer — until your next wash
  • A sensation of dryness if your scalp is on the sensitive side, easing as the hydrating step takes effect

Less common but worth knowing

Serious complications are not expected from a treatment of this kind. The realistic concerns are:

  • Irritation or a reaction to an ingredient in the cleansing or hydrating solution, appearing as itching, redness or a rash. Tell us in advance about any known sensitivity to hair or skincare products.
  • Persistent sensitivity of the scalp for longer than a day or so, particularly if your skin is generally reactive.
  • Aggravation of an undiagnosed scalp condition. Cleansing and exfoliating a scalp that is inflamed for a medical reason can make it more uncomfortable, not less — which is why an undiagnosed rash is assessed rather than treated.
  • Disappointment if the expectation was thicker or fuller hair. This treatment addresses the condition of the scalp, not the growth of hair.

When to wait or get assessed instead

This treatment should be deferred, or replaced by proper assessment, if you have:

  • Open sores, cuts, weeping areas or scabs on the scalp
  • An active scalp infection, including a suspected fungal infection
  • A rash, persistent flaking or redness that has not been diagnosed
  • An active flare of psoriasis, eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis on the scalp
  • A known allergy or sensitivity to an ingredient in the products used
  • Recent scalp surgery or a hair transplant still healing
  • Recent chemical processing, such as relaxing or bleaching, that has left the scalp sore
  • Sunburn on an exposed scalp
  • Unexplained hair loss, which warrants assessment of the cause first

This is not a complete screening list. Your scalp, routine, products and any sensitivities are reviewed before treatment.

Your at-home hair and scalp care

What you do between visits determines how long the benefit lasts.

Wash the scalp, not just the hair. Shampoo is meant for the skin; conditioner is meant for the lengths. Reversing the two is a common cause of a congested scalp.

Go easy on dry shampoo. Useful occasionally, but it is product sitting on skin, and repeated use between washes is a reliable route back to buildup.

Keep prescribed treatments going. If a clinician has given you a medicated shampoo or scalp preparation, continue it as directed. This treatment sits alongside that, not instead of it.

Use any home-care product provided as advised, and tell us if it stings, itches or does not agree with you.

Anti-Aging Medical & Laser Clinic

Why patients choose our clinic

  • We check before we treat. A scalp that needs a diagnosis gets pointed toward one rather than booked for a cosmetic treatment.
  • Delivered by experienced laser technicians and estheticians, working directly under the guidance of our physicians — Dr. Gidon Frame, Dr. Sarina Govindasamy and Dr. Teri Fisher.
  • Clear about what this is. It is scalp care, not a hair-loss treatment, and we do not blur that line.
  • A Vancouver clinic since 2001, with medical oversight available when a scalp concern turns out to need it.
  • Practical home advice that keeps the benefit going, rather than a treatment you have to keep buying to feel any difference.

FAQ

Questions about Scalp Hydration & Clarification.

No. It addresses the condition of the scalp — how clean, hydrated and comfortable it is — and does nothing to the hair follicles or to the causes of hair loss. If thinning or shedding is your actual concern, it deserves proper assessment of the cause rather than a cosmetic treatment.

Mostly in what it targets and how thoroughly. Ordinary washing cleans the hair and the scalp gets whatever incidental attention it receives along the way. This works section by section on the skin of the scalp itself, exfoliating around the follicle openings, and then hydrates that skin directly. For most people with mild buildup, better washing technique genuinely is enough.

A technician — specifically, one of our experienced laser technicians or estheticians, working directly under the guidance of our physicians, Dr. Gidon Frame, Dr. Sarina Govindasamy and Dr. Teri Fisher. There are no needles involved in a scalp hydration and clarification treatment, so it does not call for a physician to carry it out. Where a doctor does come in is the assessment: if what is going on with your scalp looks like a condition rather than buildup, that gets handed to one of our physicians rather than treated cosmetically.

It depends what the dandruff actually is. Light flaking from a dry or congested scalp often improves. Persistent flaking with redness, itching or thick greasy scale is more likely seborrhoeic dermatitis, which is a medical condition needing medical treatment. Have it diagnosed, treat it, and then this can be useful for comfort alongside it.

Tell us if your hair is coloured, and when it was last done, so products and timing can be considered. If you have just had colour or a chemical service, or your scalp is still sore from one, it is generally better to wait rather than to work over freshly processed skin.

There is no universal schedule, because it depends entirely on how oily your scalp runs, how much product you use, how often you wash and how much you sweat. Someone using dry shampoo daily will feel congested again far sooner than someone who does not. Judge it by how your scalp feels rather than by a calendar.

Usually yes, with adjustment. Mention it beforehand so pressure and products can be moderated, and speak up during the treatment if any area feels sore — it should feel scratchy and cool, not painful. If you have a history of reacting to hair products, that is worth reviewing before we start.

No, and it is not necessary to arrive with a freshly washed scalp. Come as you normally are. Your hair will be damp when you leave and may sit flatter than usual until your next wash, so plan the appointment with that in mind.

The consultation is complimentary, so having someone part the hair and tell you honestly whether this is buildup or something needing a diagnosis costs you no consultation fee. Reserving the appointment does carry a booking fee, which holds the time, covers the physician's time and helps reduce no-shows.
