Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Visible facial creases that develop from repeated expression, collagen loss, sun exposure and skin dryness.
Technology
A needle-free facial treatment combining synchronized radiofrequency (RF) with HIFES muscle stimulation to tone and lift facial muscles, with a dedicated functional protocol for TMJ (jaw) discomfort.
Technology overview
Emface is a needle-free facial treatment that pairs synchronized radiofrequency (RF) with HIFES (high-intensity facial electrical stimulation). The RF gently heats the deeper skin to encourage collagen, while HIFES stimulates the facial muscles to contract, with the aim of building muscle tone and a modest lift in areas such as the forehead and cheeks. A dedicated Emface Functional protocol applies an ultra-low-frequency form of the same technology to the jaw muscles to help manage the discomfort and restricted movement of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. It is a platform used within a treatment plan rather than a stand-alone promise, used as a needle-free option alongside, not a guaranteed replacement for, injectable approaches.
Each session delivers RF and HIFES at the same time. The RF warms the deeper skin to stimulate collagen remodelling, while HIFES triggers many muscle contractions to condition the underlying facial muscles, the goal being firmer tone and a modest lift, rather than the muscle relaxation that neuromodulators produce. For the jaw, the Functional protocol uses an ultra-low-frequency stimulation intended to relax and retrain the chewing (masticatory) muscles, which small studies have linked to easier jaw movement and reduced pain. Because it targets muscle and skin rather than blocking nerve signals, Emface works differently from botulinum toxin and is often discussed as a complement or an alternative for selected goals. Suitability and protocol are decided at assessment.

Evidence: Dhanani S, Kulic K, Chandra T. TMJ dysfunction management using ultra-low-frequency HIFES and synchronized RF: preliminary results (manufacturer-backed prospective single-arm study, 25 patients; no comparator).
Evidence: Applegate B, Chandra T, Dhanani S, Wade J. HIFES and synchronized RF for pain and functional disability in TMJ pain: a prospective multicenter single-arm study (manufacturer-backed, 48 patients; no comparator).
Emface aids facial-muscle and TMJ-function goals; it is not a jaw-slimming treatment (that is a separate, muscle-reducing approach) and it does not replace dental or medical assessment of TMJ pain.

Emface is needle-free, typically delivered as short (about 20-minute) sessions in a short series, and generally requires little or no downtime. In the studies available, patients reported better jaw relaxation, easier movement and reduced pain for the TMJ protocol, and 3D imaging in a facial case report showed increased mid-face and cheek volume. These are encouraging but early results: outcomes vary between individuals, build over a series, and cannot be guaranteed.

Most people tolerate Emface well. Expected effects during and after a session include warmth, a pulling or tapping sensation from the muscle contractions, and temporary redness or mild swelling that usually settles within hours. Some people notice muscle ache or jaw fatigue for a day or two afterwards, much as after unaccustomed exercise, and occasional headache has been reported. As with any radiofrequency device, there is an uncommon risk of thermal injury to the skin, such as a burn or blister, if energy is not applied appropriately; correct applicator contact, trained delivery and monitoring through the session are what keep this uncommon.
Emface is not suitable for people with electronic or metallic implants in or near the treatment area, for example a pacemaker or defibrillator. Substantial metal dental work should be raised before the jaw (Functional) protocol, as the applicators sit over the chewing muscles. Caution or avoidance applies in pregnancy and in certain medical conditions, and suitability is confirmed at assessment.
Evidence, honestly: much of the current TMJ evidence comes from small, manufacturer-backed, single-arm studies without a comparison group, and no adverse events were recorded in them. Those studies are too small and too short to establish a full safety profile, so the absence of reported events is best read as limited data rather than as evidence that no risk exists. The facial smile-symmetry evidence is a single peer-reviewed case report. Any Health Canada authorization for a specific indication should be confirmed and is a separate question from these efficacy findings.

Uses controlled heat or focused energy to stimulate gradual collagen remodelling and modestly firm the skin without surgery.
Uses botulinum toxin type A to temporarily relax selected muscles, softening dynamic lines and helping certain muscle- or sweat-related concerns.
Conditions It May Help Address
The relationship between a technology and a concern depends on the treatment plan, patient assessment, and how the technology is being used.
Visible facial creases that develop from repeated expression, collagen loss, sun exposure and skin dryness.
A softer or less-defined jawline shaped by chin structure, facial fat, muscle size, skin laxity, or tissue descent.
Reduced firmness and mild tissue descent related to aging and the decline of collagen and elastin.
Loose neck skin, horizontal creases, or visible muscle bands that can reduce definition of the neck and jawline.
Changes in body shape driven by fat distribution, muscle loss, skin laxity, pregnancy, aging or weight fluctuation.
Creases around the mouth, from the nose to the mouth corners and from the mouth toward the chin, that deepen with movement, volume change, and tissue descent.
An under-projected or recessed chin that can affect the facial profile and jawline balance.
A lowered eyebrow position that can make the upper eye area feel heavy or tired.
A smile that shows more upper gum tissue than a person would prefer.

FAQ
Not exactly, it works the opposite way. Neuromodulators relax muscles to soften lines, while Emface aims to tone and lift facial muscles and firm skin. For some goals it can be a needle-free complement or alternative, and for others injectables remain more appropriate. A consultation clarifies which suits your goals.
It is a jaw-focused protocol that uses ultra-low-frequency stimulation to help relax the chewing muscles and ease the discomfort and stiffness of TMJ dysfunction. Small studies have reported better jaw mobility and reduced pain, and recorded no adverse events, though those studies are early and too small to establish a full safety profile. It complements, and does not replace, dental or medical assessment of TMJ pain.
Emface is needle-free. Sessions last around 20 minutes, during which you feel warmth and muscle contractions, and there is usually little or no downtime. Some people notice mild muscle ache or jaw fatigue for a day or two afterwards. Specific aftercare is provided based on your treatment.
Treatment is typically a short series (for example four sessions), individualized to your goals, with results building gradually. Your provider will advise a plan at consultation, with realistic expectations and no guarantees.
