Muscle Toning & Body Contouring

Uses electromagnetic energy to stimulate strong muscle contractions, sometimes combined with radiofrequency, to aid muscle tone and body contour.

Understanding Muscle Toning & Body Contouring.

This is the treatment for people who want definition, not a smaller number on the scale.

Focused electromagnetic energy makes the muscles in one area contract harder and far more often than you can make them contract yourself. Some systems add radiofrequency heating, so fat in the same area is addressed alongside the muscle.

It builds tone in a specific area. It does not make you lose weight, and it is not a treatment for obesity. It works best on people who are already close to a stable weight and want a particular area to look stronger.

People often arrive asking for one of these when they want another. If your goal is weight or metabolic health, muscle stimulation is the wrong tool — and we will say so rather than book you in.

Treatment options and technologies

Electromagnetic muscle stimulation is one of several clinically recognised approaches to body contour and muscle definition, and it is not always the appropriate one — fat reduction, skin tightening and medical weight management each address a different problem.

The option available here for muscle tone, selected according to clinical findings:

  • Emsculpt NEO — considered where a defined area such as the abdomen, buttocks, arms or thighs lacks muscle tone and definition in a person at or near a stable weight, and where fat overlying that same muscle is also a factor

The selection is a clinical decision, not one you are expected to make. Your body composition, weight stability, activity level and the depth of fat overlying the target muscle are assessed, and implants, electronic devices, metal in the area, hernias and recent surgery are screened before any approach is recommended.

Concerns this treatment may help

Commonly treated goals:

  • Abdominal definition — where the muscle is there but not visible
  • Buttock shape and lift without implants or injections
  • Core tone, including after pregnancy once cleared to return to activity
  • Upper-arm definition
  • Thigh and calf tone
  • Reduced muscle tone from inactivity or age
  • A stubborn area that has not responded to training in the way the rest of you has

Where it helps only partly, or not at all: cellulite, loose or crepey skin, and significant fat that is not a discrete localized pocket. Those are different concerns needing different treatments — or, in some cases, no treatment at all.

Discuss the Area You Want to Define →

Who may benefit

Best suited to: healthy adults at or near a stable weight who already move regularly and want a specific area to look more defined, and who understand this adds to their efforts rather than replacing them.

Less suited to: people hoping to lose weight, people whose main concern is loose skin, and people who expect one course to substitute for ongoing activity.

Generally not used in people with a cardiac pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, neurostimulator, drug pump or other electronic implant, or with metal implants in or near the treatment area. Pregnancy, active malignancy, epilepsy, a hernia in the treatment area and recent surgery in the area are also reasons to hold off.

This is not rehabilitation. If you are recovering strength after injury, surgery or illness, that belongs with physiotherapy or medical care, not with an aesthetic contouring treatment.

Your consultation

Sessions are delivered by experienced laser technicians under the medical direction of Dr. Gidon Frame, and the consultation is where suitability is settled before anything is booked.

We assess: the area you want treated, your body composition and how stable your weight has been, your activity level, and what you are actually hoping to see.

We screen for: implants and electronic devices, metal in or near the area, hernias, pregnancy, recent surgery and relevant medical conditions. This part is not a formality — some of these are absolute reasons not to treat.

We are direct about fit. If your goal is weight loss, skin laxity or rehabilitation, you will be pointed to the right thing rather than sold this one.

What the consultation costs you: nothing. The consultation itself is complimentary. A booking fee is charged when you reserve the appointment, which holds the time set aside for you, covers the physician's time and reduces no-shows.

What a session is like

You stay dressed in comfortable clothing and lie down. Applicators are positioned over the target muscles and strapped in place.

Intensity is built up gradually at the start of the session and adjusted to what you can tolerate. Tell the technician how it feels — the setting is meant to be worked up to, not endured.

What it feels like: strong, rhythmic pulling as the muscle contracts, interspersed with tapping phases. Where radiofrequency is used, a distinct warmth builds. Strange at first; not painful.

Duration: typically around half an hour per area, depending on the system.

You can read, scroll or talk throughout, and drive yourself home afterwards.

Results and treatment planning

What it can improve. Muscle tone and definition in the treated area, abdominal and gluteal firmness, and — where radiofrequency is part of the system — fat in that same area. Many people notice the area feels firmer before it looks different.

What it cannot do. It will not reduce your body weight, treat obesity, tighten loose skin, resolve cellulite, or rebuild strength lost to injury or illness. It also will not create definition that is hidden under a substantial fat layer — muscle you have built is only visible if there is not too much sitting over it.

When change appears. Not immediately. Because the change depends on muscle adaptation, it emerges over weeks after a course rather than during it, and continues to develop for a period after the final session.

Series and maintenance. Treatment is delivered as a course of sessions over a few weeks, not as a one-off. Muscle adaptation is reversible, so periodic maintenance sessions are commonly used to hold the result.

What influences the outcome: your starting muscle mass and body composition, how much fat overlies the treated muscle, your age, hormonal factors, activity level, protein intake and weight stability.

Individual response varies considerably. Some people see a clear change in shape; others notice firmness without much visible difference.

Afterwards

There is no downtime. You can go straight back to work, the gym or anything else.

Expect to feel it the next day. Muscle soreness much like the day after a hard workout is normal, and usually settles within a day or two.

Where radiofrequency was used, temporary warmth or redness in the area is common and fades quickly.

What helps: drink water, keep moving gently, and treat it as you would post-training soreness.

Contact the clinic if soreness is severe or worsening rather than easing, if you notice a blister or a burn, if there is significant swelling, or if you develop dark urine or unusually severe muscle pain after a session.

Possible side effects

Usual and short-lived:

  • Muscle soreness for a day or two, like delayed-onset soreness after training
  • Temporary muscle fatigue or heaviness in the area
  • Warmth, redness or flushing of the skin where radiofrequency is used
  • Brief muscle twitching or spasm during or shortly after the session
  • Mild tenderness where the applicators were strapped
  • Temporary skin sensitivity in the treated area

These generally resolve without anything needing to be done.

Less common but important risks

Uncommon effects include:

  • Burns or blistering where radiofrequency heating is part of the treatment, particularly if skin contact is uneven
  • Prolonged or severe muscle pain lasting well beyond the usual day or two
  • Cramping or persistent spasm in the treated muscle group
  • Aggravation of an existing hernia in the treatment area
  • Strain of the treated muscle or associated joint discomfort, particularly in the lower back with abdominal treatment
  • Temporary changes in skin pigment after any heat-based component
  • Interference with an implanted electronic device, which is why screening for these is absolute rather than cautionary
  • No visible change, despite completing a full course

Very rarely, intense muscle activity of any kind can cause significant muscle breakdown. Severe, unrelenting muscle pain with dark-coloured urine after a session needs urgent medical attention rather than a wait-and-see approach.

When this treatment is not appropriate

Treatment is generally not carried out if you have:

  • A cardiac pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, neurostimulator or drug delivery pump
  • Any metal implant, plate, screw or joint replacement in or near the treatment area
  • An intrauterine device, depending on its type and the area being treated — tell us either way
  • A hernia in the treatment area, or a recently repaired one
  • Pregnancy, or recent childbirth without medical clearance
  • Epilepsy or a seizure disorder
  • Active cancer, or cancer under treatment
  • Fever or an active infection
  • Recent surgery in the treatment area, or unhealed scarring
  • A bleeding disorder or significant cardiovascular condition
  • Impaired sensation in the area, so that discomfort could not be reported reliably
  • Broken skin, active inflammation or a skin condition affecting the area

This is not a complete screening list. Your medical history, implants, previous surgery and current medications are reviewed individually before treatment.

Why patients choose our clinic

  • We match the treatment to the goal. Fat, muscle, skin and weight are four different problems, and sending you to the right one matters more to us than filling a session.
  • Careful screening for implants and devices, because with electromagnetic treatment this is a safety question rather than a paperwork one.
  • Experienced laser technicians delivering treatment under the medical direction of Dr. Gidon Frame.
  • Realistic expectations set beforehand, including how much of a difference an area with overlying fat is likely to show.
  • A physician on site if a medical question comes up mid-course.
  • Serving Vancouver since 2001.

FAQ

Questions about Muscle Toning & Body Contouring.

The contractions are real and involuntary, and the muscle responds in a similar way to how it responds to intense training — which is why soreness the following day is common. What varies is how much visible difference that makes on any given person, and how much of it is hidden beneath overlying fat.

No, and framing it that way tends to end in disappointment. It works on the muscles in one treated area for a limited time, while exercise affects your cardiovascular health, metabolism, bone density, mood and whole body. Think of it as concentrating effort on a stubborn area, not as replacing the effort.

Yes, unless you have been told otherwise. Continuing your usual activity, eating enough protein and keeping your weight stable all support the outcome. You may want to avoid a heavy session targeting the same muscle group on the same day, simply for comfort.

No. Electronic implants such as pacemakers, defibrillators, neurostimulators and drug pumps are absolute reasons not to have electromagnetic muscle treatment, at any intensity, because of the risk of interfering with the device. This is not a matter of adjusting settings, and any provider willing to negotiate on it should be avoided.

Not without clearance. Metal from a surgical repair in the area, unhealed tissue, scarring and hernias all matter, and recent abdominal surgery is a reason to wait. Bring details of what was done and when, and expect to be asked to check with the surgeon or your physician if there is any doubt.

Muscle adaptation is reversible, in the same way training gains are. Staying active and keeping your weight stable holds the result for longer, and periodic maintenance sessions are commonly used. Doing nothing at all afterwards means the change fades over time.

Multiple areas can often be addressed, though usually sequenced rather than all at once, both for comfort and because the soreness afterwards compounds. Your technician will plan the order and spacing based on your goals and how you tolerate the first sessions.

Because your muscle did, whether or not you consciously took part. The contractions produced during a session are more intense and more numerous than voluntary ones, so the delayed soreness that follows is the normal muscular response to unaccustomed work. It settles within a day or two.

The consultation itself is complimentary, so finding out whether muscle stimulation is the right tool for your goal does not cost you a consultation fee. There is a booking fee charged to reserve the appointment, which holds that time for you, covers the physician's time and reduces no-shows.
