Understanding Sculptra.
Sculptra is a collagen stimulator that gradually restores facial fullness and strengthens skin structure. It contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biodegradable material long used in medical products such as dissolvable sutures. After treatment, your body builds its own new collagen, so results develop gradually and look natural.
Because the change builds over time, Sculptra is usually given as a course of treatments. At our clinic, it's injected by our experienced physicians.
How does Sculptra work?
Sculptra is supplied as a powder that's mixed into a suspension before treatment. Once injected, the poly-L-lactic acid particles act as a gentle stimulus in the tissue, prompting your body to produce new collagen, the protein that gives skin its firmness and structure.
Over the following weeks and months, the particles are broken down and absorbed, while the new collagen restores fullness and supports the skin. Because the result comes from your own collagen, it appears gradually and keeps building after each session.
What Sculptra improves
Sculptra is well suited to gradual, more widespread loss of facial volume and to strengthening overall skin structure. It's often used in the midface and cheeks and to soften broad folds linked to volume loss.

Safety, side effects and considerations
Sculptra is a medical product, injected at our clinic only by our experienced physicians after assessment. For comfort, your physician may use a numbing cream or a local anesthetic (lidocaine). Depending on the area, Sculptra is placed with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula.
Common and temporary
- Swelling, redness and tenderness at the injection sites
- Bruising
- Small bumps you can feel at the injection sites
Less common risks
- Nodules. Small lumps can occasionally form under the skin, sometimes weeks or months later. Careful technique and following your massage advice help reduce this, and any lump that persists should be checked.
- Infection at an injection site
- Allergic reaction
- Delayed swelling or a reaction weeks or months after treatment, sometimes following dental work, a vaccination or an illness such as the flu
Blocked blood vessel (vascular occlusion). As with any facial injectable, there's a rare but serious risk of product entering or pressing on a blood vessel, which can affect blood supply to an area of skin and, very rarely, vision. Our physicians understand facial anatomy and are prepared to recognize and manage this promptly. Contact the clinic straight away on 604-261-9121 if you notice skin turning pale or white (blanching), a dusky or patchy colour change, pain that keeps increasing, or any change in your vision. If your vision changes and you can't reach us right away, go to the nearest emergency department.
When treatment may need to wait
- An active infection, cold sore or skin inflammation in or near the area
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- An autoimmune condition, which your physician reviews with you first
- A bleeding disorder, or taking blood thinners or supplements that increase bruising. Please don't stop a prescribed medicine without your doctor's advice.
- A known allergy to lidocaine or to any component of Sculptra
- A tendency to keloids or raised scarring
- Recent or upcoming dental work, a vaccination or an illness. Let us know, so your treatment can be timed around it.
Because Sculptra isn't reversible in the way hyaluronic acid fillers are, your physician confirms it suits you before you start.
Aftercare
Your physician may ask you to massage the treated area at home for a few days, which helps Sculptra settle evenly. Follow that advice closely. For a short time after treatment, also avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and hot tubs. You'll leave with aftercare instructions for your areas.
