The essentials

Understanding CoolSculpting.

CoolSculpting is a non-surgical body-contouring treatment based on cryolipolysis, a technique that uses precisely controlled cooling to affect fat cells in a defined area beneath the skin. An applicator draws or holds tissue against cooling plates for a set period, after which the treated fat cells are gradually cleared by the body over the following weeks to months. It is designed to reduce small, localized pockets of stubborn fat in people who are already near their target weight, and it is not a treatment for general weight loss or obesity.

How does CoolSculpting work?

Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the surrounding skin, nerves, and other tissues. During treatment, the applicator cools the targeted fat to a temperature intended to injure fat cells while sparing nearby structures. The affected fat cells undergo a natural process of cell death, and over the following weeks the body gradually breaks down and removes them through its normal metabolic pathways. Because this clearance is gradual, any reduction in the treated bulge appears over time rather than immediately.

Where it's used

CoolSculpting is commonly used for localized subcutaneous fat that persists despite diet and exercise, in areas such as the abdomen, flanks, back, thighs, upper arms, and beneath the chin. It is best suited to people close to their desired weight who have discrete, pinchable fat rather than generalized excess weight. It does not treat visceral fat (fat around the internal organs), tighten loose skin, or replace healthy lifestyle measures. A clinical assessment is advised to determine whether it is a reasonable option for your goals.

What to expect from it

Potential advantages include that it is non-surgical, involves no incisions or anaesthetic, and generally allows most people to return to usual activities the same day. It targets a specific area of fat that can be resistant to diet and exercise. Results build gradually and vary from person to person; a single area often needs more than one session, and the degree of fat reduction differs between individuals. It is a contouring treatment, not a method of weight loss.

Safety profile and limits

Common, usually temporary effects include redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, and numbness in the treated area, which may last from days to several weeks. A rare but recognized risk is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, in which the treated fat gradually enlarges rather than shrinks; this is more frequently reported in men, does not resolve on its own, and may require surgical correction. The treatment is generally avoided in people with certain cold-related disorders (such as cryoglobulinemia or cold urticaria). A physician-led consultation is important to review your health history, discuss realistic expectations, and confirm suitability before treatment.

FAQ

Questions about CoolSculpting.

No. It is a body-contouring treatment intended to reduce small, localized pockets of fat in people who are near their target weight. It is not a treatment for obesity or general weight loss, and it works best alongside a stable, healthy lifestyle.

Because the body clears the treated fat cells gradually, changes typically build over the weeks to months after treatment rather than immediately. The degree of change varies between individuals, and more than one session in an area is often needed.

It is a rare but recognized outcome in which the treated fat area gradually becomes larger rather than smaller. It is reported more often in men, does not resolve on its own, and may require surgical correction. Your clinician should discuss this risk with you before treatment.

Fat cells that are cleared by the body do not return, but the fat cells that remain can still enlarge if you gain weight. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve any change. Results and their durability vary between individuals.

No. CoolSculpting targets fat and is not intended to tighten skin. If skin laxity is a concern, a clinical assessment can help show whether other options may be more appropriate.
