Treatment Overview

Treatment Overview

IPL Photofacial

“IPL Photofacial” uses light energy that is converted to heat to target cells below the skin’s surface without causing damage to the top layers of skin, using short blasts of a polychromatic, high-intensity light to penetrate just below the skin’s surface, breaking up either the melanin that makes up brown age spots, or destroying broken capillaries – small, dilated, non-functional veins medically known as telangiectasia rosacea. IPL treatments also boost collagen and elastin growth.

What to expect

What to expect

Planning Your IPL Treatment

As with all treatments at our clinic, we require a preliminary consultation with a member of our highly qualified staff. During this time, we will review your concerns, treatment expectations, current skincare regimen, price estimates, and a brief overview of your relevant medical history. We use this information to ensure we are able to give you the results you are looking for with realistic expectations.

Before the Treatment

Prior to your IPL treatment, you should also avoid the sun completely, or wait 1 – 2 months after your last sun exposure to book your IPL treatment. That is why we recommend you book your IPL treatment during the fall, winter and early spring as these are the best times for IPL treatments. You should avoid using retinol, glycolic or exfoliating treatments 7 days prior to your IPL treatment. Also, avoid using Accutane for 12 months prior to treatments.

During the Treatment

Once you arrive at the clinic, you will be ready for treatment.Your eyes will be covered with adhesive laser shields and you’ll see a bright, continuous flash of light. You’ll feel some heat and a slight “snapping” sensation, but for most people, IPL treatments are comfortable and well tolerated. The duration of the treatment can be between 20 – 60 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

After the Treatment

Immediately following your IPL treatment, you may notice some darkening of brown spots. Broken capillaries may be reduced but are sometimes initially darker or bruised. Depending on what condition is being treated, you will notice some pinkness. Most brown spots take from 3 – 10 days to completely slough off. It is important to resist picking, peeling, or scrubbing the darkened areas for at least 2 weeks. For some, swelling of the treated area, particularly around the eyes, is possible and considered a normal side effect, which should resolve in 3 – 4 days.

IPL Treatments Give Noticeable Results

This treatment gives you noticeable results you’ll love. IPL treatments, sometimes referred to as “IPL photofacials” , is a broad-spectrum light treatment. IPL works the same way as skin lasers, using light energy that is converted to heat to target cells below the skin’s surface without causing damage to the top layers of skin.

IPL uses short blasts of a polychromatic, high-intensity light to penetrate just below the skin’s surface, breaking up either the melanin that makes up brown age spots, or destroying broken capillaries – small, dilated, non-functional veins medically known as telangiectasia rosacea. IPL treatments also boost collagen and elastin growth.

Are there any contraindications?
Although no adverse reactions to a fetus are known to result from IPL treatments, we do not recommend proceeding with the treatment if you suspect or are known to be pregnant.
Additionally, if you have diseases which may be stimulated by light at the wavelengths used in IPL, such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Porphyria, and Epilepsy, you should not do the IPL treatment.
Can IPL be applied to dark skin?
Yes, but if you have a darker skin tone, your consultant may recommend pre-treating the skin for 2 weeks with appropriate skincare products.
What should I do for post-care treatment?
After your treatment, cold gel packs may be applied to the skin
Drink plenty of water
Do not use products with acids, retinols, or exfoliants for a week
Use sunblock every day
Any dry, flaking skin will slough off naturally in up to 2 weeks
You may use a mineral-based, powder makeup (available at the clinic) until your skin is completely healed.
IPL vs BBL, which is better?
Both IPL and BBL use light energy to heat and rejuvenate the skin. That being said, BBL is a newer technology which has been proven to literally turn back the clock by altering the way DNA is expressed in the body. Additionally, BBL offers customizable solutions, allowing for the treatment of a diversity of skin types.
