How Can Sun Damage Your Skin?

The sun brings warmth and light, making it an important part of life on earth. Our bodies have evolved to not only crave sunlight, but to need it. Specifically, the sun allows for the synthesis of Vitamin D. Vitamin D has many important roles in health optimization, however excessive sun exposure can do more damage than good.

The sun emits two forms of ultraviolet radiation, UVA and UVB, both of which are harmful to the skin. Due to the nature of UVB, it affects the superficial layers of the skin, causing DNA changes at the cellular level. These rays account for sunburns and most skin cancers, and are what most sunscreens strive to protect against. 95% of UV rays that reach the earth’s surface are UVA, and are the primary cause of premature aging from sun damage. While UVA is significantly more abundant and is not filtered by clouds or windows, most sunscreens do not provide protection from its harmful effects. This is why regular use of quality broad-spectrum sunscreen is so heavily emphasized by medical professionals.

It is critical that your sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB.

Is sun exposure good for your skin?

Regulated exposure to sunlight allows for the critical synthesis of vitamin D. Vitamin D is integral to the absorption of calcium, promoting strong and healthy bones, and is debated to help with skin healing. There is also some evidence correlating vitamin D deficiencies to some cancers, heart disease, and depression. All these influences express the importance of sunlight for health and happiness. That being said, it is important to emphasize that these benefits are only positive in safe and controlled instances of sun exposure. It is estimated 20 minutes of sunshine on one arm daily is sufficient as irreparable sun damage can occur after just 10 minutes of unprotected sun exposure on the face and body. This damage causes premature aging, pigmentation, and increases the risk of skin cancer.

Is sun-damaged skin permanent?

Sun damage causes changes to your body’s DNA at the cellular level. While many of the consequences of sun damage, such as wrinkles and sunspots, can be improved, the skin will never return to the way it once was

The best way to “get rid” of sun-damaged skin, is to prevent it. Hats, broad-spectrum sunscreens, and antioxidants are critical everyday practices. UVA can penetrate clouds and windows, meaning sunscreen should be worn every single day, whether it is cloudy or if you plan to stay inside. That being said, best practice is not always possible and the damage may already be done. That is why we are here. Sun-damaged skin is often dry and aged. This means flaky, deflated, and dull skin with age and sun spots, wrinkles, and unwanted texture. These effects of sun damage can be helped with a variety of machine laser treatments, some injectables, and the religious use of medical-grade skincare products.
